Vaiśampāyana said: Pāṇḍu saw his five handsome sons grow up in that great forest on the mountain, protected by the strength of his arms.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: पाण्डु ने अपने पाँच सुन्दर पुत्रों को पहाड़ के उस विशाल जंगल में बड़े होते देखा, जो उनकी भुजाओं के बल से सुरक्षित थे।

One day, it was the season of spring, when the forests are in full bloom and all beings are drunk and maddened. The king was roaming through the forest with his wives.
एक दिन, यह वसंत का मौसम था, जब जंगल पूरी तरह से खिले हुए होते हैं और सभी प्राणी नशे में और उन्मत्त होते हैं। राजा अपनी पत्नियों के साथ जंगल में घूम रहा था।
Pāṇḍu saw the forest, with trees like palāśa, tilakā, cūta, campakā, pāribhadraka and many other trees that were laden with flowers and fruit. The ponds were beautiful with many different kinds of lotuses.
पाण्डु ने जंगल देखा, जिसमें पलाश, तिलक, कूट, चम्पक, परिभद्रक और कई अन्य पेड़ थे जो फूलों और फलों से लदे हुए थे। तालाब अनेक प्रकार के कमलों से सुन्दर थे।
The ponds were beautiful with many different kinds of lotuses. On seeing this, his heart turned to thoughts of love.
तालाब अनेक प्रकार के कमलों से सुन्दर थे। यह देख कर उस के दिल में प्यार का ख्याल आ गया.
Like a god, he was wandering around happily. Mādrī followed him, clad in a beautiful and semi-transparent garment.
वह देवता के समान सुखपूर्वक विचरण कर रहा था। माद्री एक सुंदर और अर्ध-पारदर्शी वस्त्र पहने हुए उसके पीछे चल रही थी।
On seeing her youth through that garment, desire stirred in him, like a dense forest fire.
उस वस्त्र के माध्यम से उसकी जवानी को देखकर, घने जंगल की आग की तरह उसके अंदर इच्छा जाग उठी।

रहस्यात्मसमां दृष्ट्वा राजा राजीवलोचनाम् न शशाक नियन्तुं तं कामं कामबलात्कृतः
The king stared at the one with eyes like that of a blue lotus, like his own. He could not control his desire and desire overpowered him.
राजा ने उसकी ओर अपने समान नीले कमल के समान नेत्रों से देखा। वह अपनी इच्छा पर काबू नहीं रख सका और इच्छा उस पर हावी हो गई।
In that private place, the king forcibly seized her. The queen struggled and resisted, to the best of her strength.

But his heart was taken over by desire. He did not remember the curse. Following the dharma of intercourse, he forcibly entered Mādrī.
परन्तु उसके हृदय पर अभिलाषा ने कब्ज़ा कर लिया। उसे श्राप याद नहीं था. उन्होंने मैथुन धर्म का पालन करते हुए बलपूर्वक माद्री में प्रवेश किया।
Under the control of love, the descendant of the Kuru lineage acted so as to end his own life. He had no fear of the curse and penetrated his beloved forcibly.
प्रेम के वश में होकर, कुरु वंश के वंशज ने अपने जीवन को समाप्त करने का कार्य किया। उसे श्राप का कोई डर नहीं था और उसने अपनी प्रेमिका में बलपूर्वक प्रवेश कर लिया।
With desire in his heart, his intelligence was deluded by destiny itself. Since he was prey to his senses, his consciousness was destroyed.
हृदय में इच्छा रखते हुए, उसकी बुद्धि को भाग्य ने ही भ्रमित कर दिया था। चूंकि वह अपनी इंद्रियों का शिकार था, इसलिए उसकी चेतना नष्ट हो गई थी।

Pāṇḍu, the descendant of the Kuru lineage and supremely devoted to dharma, succumbed to the law of time when united with his wife.
कुरु वंश के वंशज और धर्म के प्रति अत्यंत समर्पित पांडु, अपनी पत्नी के साथ एकजुट होने पर समय के नियम के आगे झुक गए।
Embracing the senseless king in her arms, the miserable Mādrī began to repeatedly and loudly lament.
दुखी माद्री उस मूर्ख राजा को अपनी बाहों में भरकर बार-बार और जोर-जोर से विलाप करने लगी।

सह पुत्रैस्ततः कुन्ती माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ आजग्मुः सहितास्तत्र यत्र राजा तथागतः
Kuntī and the Pāṇḍava-s, who were her sons and Mādrī's sons, all came to the place where the king was lying.
कुंती और पांडव, जो उनके पुत्र और माद्री के पुत्र थे, सभी उस स्थान पर आए जहां राजा लेटे हुए थे।
O king! Mādrī called out to Kuntī. "Come here alone and leave the children there."

Hearing these words, she asked the children to stay away. Coming closer, she screamed, "I am dead."
ये बातें सुनकर उसने बच्चों को दूर रहने को कहा। करीब आकर वह चिल्लाई, "मैं मर गई।"

दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुं च माद्रीं च शयानौ धरणीतले कुन्ती शोकपरीताङ्गी विललाप सुदुःखिता
On seeing both Pāṇḍu and Mādrī lying on the ground, Kuntī's body was overcome with grief and she lamented miserably.
पाण्डु और माद्री दोनों को भूमि पर पड़ा देखकर कुन्ती का शरीर दुःख से भर गया और वह दुःखी होकर विलाप करने लगी।
"This hero always protected me by controlling himself. You knew about the hermit's curse. Why did you transgress it?
"इस वीर ने स्वयं पर नियंत्रण रखकर सदैव मेरी रक्षा की। तुम्हें साधु के श्राप के बारे में पता था। तुमने इसका उल्लंघन क्यों किया?"

ननु नाम त्वया माद्रि रक्षितव्यो जनाधिपः सा कथं लोभितवती विजने त्वं नराधिपम्
O Mādrī! You should have protected this king. Instead, why did you tempt him in this lonely place?
हे माद्री! आपको इस राजा की रक्षा करनी चाहिए थी। इसके बजाय, तुमने उसे इस एकान्त स्थान में क्यों प्रलोभित किया?
Knowing and thinking about the curse, he was always miserable. How did he find pleasure when he was alone with you?
शाप के बारे में जानकर और सोच-सोचकर वह सदैव दुखी रहता था। जब वह आपके साथ अकेला था तो उसे कैसे खुशी मिली?
O daughter of Bahlika! You are more fortunate than I. You have seen the lord of the earth's face when he was happy."
हे बहलिका की पुत्री! आप मुझसे अधिक भाग्यशाली हैं। आपने पृथ्वी के स्वामी को तब देखा है जब वह प्रसन्न थे।"
Mādrī replied: "It was I who got tempted. I tried to resist him repeatedly, but could not stay away. It was as if he was intent on making his destiny true."
माद्री ने उत्तर दिया: "यह मैं ही थी जो प्रलोभित हो गई थी। मैंने बार-बार उसका विरोध करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन दूर नहीं रह सकी। ऐसा लगता था जैसे वह अपने भाग्य को सच करने पर आमादा था।"
Kuntī said: "By law, I am the eldest of the two wives. The fruits of dharma accrue to me. O Mādrī! O beautiful one! Therefore, do not try to restrain me from what must be done.
कुंती ने कहा: "कानून के अनुसार, मैं दोनों पत्नियों में सबसे बड़ी हूं। धर्म का फल मुझे मिलता है। हे माद्री! हे सुंदरी! इसलिए, मुझे जो करना चाहिए उससे रोकने की कोशिश मत करो।"
I will accompany my husband who has gone to the land of the dead. Arise and let him go. Take care of the children."
मैं अपने पति के साथ जाऊँगी जो मृतकों के देश में गया है। उठो और उसे जाने दो. बच्चों का ख्याल रखना।”

माद्र्युवाच अहमेवानुयास्यामि भर्तारमपलायिनम् न हि तृप्तास्मि कामानां तज्ज्येष्ठा अनुमन्यताम्
Mādrī replied: "I am still embracing my husband and have not let him escape. Nor has my desire yet been satisfied. O elder one! Please give me permission.
माद्री ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं अभी भी अपने पति को गले लगा रही हूं और उन्हें भागने नहीं दिया है। न ही मेरी इच्छा अभी तक संतुष्ट हुई है। हे बुजुर्ग! कृपया मुझे अनुमति दें।"
The best of the Bhārata lineage came to me for the sake of desire. With his desire unsatisfied, how can I let him go to Yāma's abode?
भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ लोग इच्छा की खातिर मेरे पास आए। उसकी इच्छा अतृप्त होने पर, मैं उसे यम के घर कैसे जाने दे सकता हूँ?

न चाप्यहं वर्तयन्ती निर्विशेषं सुतेषु ते वृत्तिमार्ये चरिष्यामि स्पृशेदेनस्तथा हि माम्
O revered one! If I live, it is certain that I will not be able to treat your children and mine in the same way and that sin will touch me.
हे श्रद्धेय! यदि मैं जीवित रहा तो यह निश्चित है कि मैं आपके और अपने बच्चों के साथ एक जैसा व्यवहार नहीं कर पाऊंगा और वह पाप मुझे छू जाएगा।

तस्मान्मे सुतयोः कुन्ति वर्तितव्यं स्वपुत्रवत् मां हि कामयमानोऽयं राजा प्रेतवशं गतः
O Kuntī! But you will be able to bring up my children as your own. The king has gone to the land of the dead because of his desire for me.
हे कुन्ती! लेकिन तुम मेरे बच्चों को अपने बच्चों की तरह पाल सकोगी. राजा मेरी लालसा के कारण मृत्युलोक में चला गया है।
Therefore, my body should be burnt with the king's body. O revered one! Do what is pleasurable to me and burn them together.
अत: मेरे शरीर को राजा के शरीर के साथ जला दिया जाये। हे श्रद्धेय! जो मुझे अच्छा लगे वही करो और उन्हें एक साथ जला दो।

दारकेष्वप्रमत्ता च भवेथाश्च हिता मम अतोऽन्यन्न प्रपश्यामि संदेष्टव्यं हि किंचन
Watch over the children and think kindly of me. I cannot think of anything else I need to say."
बच्चों का ख़्याल रखें और मेरे बारे में अच्छा सोचें। मैं कुछ और नहीं सोच सकता जो मुझे कहने की ज़रूरत है।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this, the illustrious daughter of the king of Madra, wife by law to that bull among men, climbed onto the fire of that funeral pyre.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: यह कहकर, मद्र के राजा की प्रतिष्ठित बेटी, पुरुषों के बीच उस बैल की पत्नी, उस चिता की आग पर चढ़ गई।
